Buy a men's or boys' lacrosse helmet that carries the NOCSAE lacrosse certification, then size it from a head measurement taken just above the eyebrows. A good fit is snug with no gaps at the temples and the front of the shell about a finger width above the eyebrows. Never modify the shell or mask, follow the maker's recertification and replacement guidance, and remember that women's headgear is a separate product built to the ASTM F3137 standard.
A lacrosse helmet is required gear in boys’ and men’s lacrosse and for goalies in every version of the game. The certification and the fit matter more than the brand.
Check the certification
Look for the NOCSAE seal for lacrosse on the shell. Leagues following NFHS, NCAA and USA Lacrosse rules require it. Do not drill, paint or swap face masks unless the manufacturer approves it, because changes can void the certification.
Measure and fit
- Measure around the head about one inch above the eyebrows.
- Use the maker’s size chart for that measurement.
- Put it on and fasten the chin strap. The front edge should sit about a finger width above the eyebrows.
- Shake your head. The helmet should move with your head, not slide on it.
- Adjust the fit system or pads until there are no gaps at the temples or the back.
Women’s headgear and eyewear
Girls’ and women’s field players wear goggles that meet the current ASTM standard and carry the SEI mark. Soft headgear is optional in most programs, and any headgear used must meet ASTM F3137. It is a different product from a men’s helmet.
Care and replacement
Air the helmet out after use, keep it out of hot cars, and inspect the shell, mask and straps often. Replace it if it cracks or deforms, and follow the maker’s service life and recertification instructions.
